organic oak & walnut desk
Last week we had our finishing room jam packed full of all these new designs. Here is another one off. The color of this oak slab top is absolutely stunning. The legs are clean square heart of (local) walnut. It is 60" long and at 30" tall it can be used as a small dining table or desk.

Here are two more pieces that just came out of the finishing room. The tops are local oak, and the single leg base is a heavy solid short beam of heart pine.
We salvaged these short pieces of heart pine from a grain mill in Columbia Tennessee a few years ago, and haven't quite figured out what to do with them. Although not as stable as some four leg tables, for a single leg I think they are working quite well. Sitting your butt on the edge of this table is out of the question, BUT a few cups of coffee and a few magazines might just be fine.
If you have any ideas of other uses for the short chunks of heart pine, I'm all ears.

organic desk heading to vegas
It's taken a while for me to go this organic with a piece. I think I was trying not to be too rustic so hard that I was missing out on all this. I just can't get enough of these over the top organic pieces that just came out of the finishing room. I'll be placing them on the appropriate page on the website soon, but for now - here's the first one.
On the surface, you might (as I did) think this super organic piece might not be the perfect fit for Las Vegas. But, if you haven't been to Vegas in a while, you might just be missing something. There is some incredibly thoughtful modern design in some of the casinos now. And, just as Vegas is known for almost everything over the top, these latest pieces are over the top organic - and for me it's still not enough.
There's a lot going on with these pieces, and I'll be going into more detail over on the webiste soon. For now, I hope you enjoy these pieces as much as I have been.

Heart Pine and Walnut table - Friday's daily deal
Heart Pine and Walnut table
It's a good thing (for you) that we aren't selling this stuff by the pound, particularly this piece. The legs are of heart pine that came from grain mill up the road in Columbia Tennessee. The top was made from scraps of walnut - with a mix of heart and sapwood. It's has a crazy low clearance price of $600. It's yours for $400 - today only. And as always, there's only one. The first credit card today to hold it gets it. And keep in mind that we close at noon on Fridays.

I've been attempting to catch this group during it's annual migration from Wisconsin to Florida for years. And, today I'm happy to report that I succeeded.
They landed recently at the Russellville Alabama airport and are landlocked by weather. Linda and I saw on their blog that they might be here, and ran down to Russellville (again this year) hoping to catch up with this amazing group.
As we pulled into the tiny airport, it was clear that they were here. Several Operation Migration vehicles - visibly three trailers and a van. In addition to the birds (that are always nicely protected from tourists and us media folks) one fan was visiting along with two of the pilots.
I've got a great 3 minute video of founder Joseph Duff sharing their amazing story.

I received a call early yesterday morning from my friends at C-Wood lumber, just across the state line in Collinwood Tennessee. Some of my walnut slab end cuts just came out of the kiln, and they were in the way. I'm pretty sure that my organic lumber (if we can really call it that) has been a complete nuisance to this outfit, and this is probably among the worst of it.
Four years ago, as we were milling this natural edge lumber - actually a lot of it. And there was an amazing amount that is typically spoilage - to be burned or tossed. Although I have no idea what I'm going to do with it, the beefiest of the lot - of end cuts, we saved, stacked, air dried, and just now it spent a 6 weeks in the kiln.
I'm sure most of it will become firewood, but there is a good bit of beautiful, almost too organic material, that I'm looking forward to getting my hands on.
In the pic above, 20 year veteran at c-wood lumber, the kiln operator/manager poses with our "pieces". Ok, one more quick story. (I'm the worst with names), but it's amazing where I find creative people. She asked what I was going to do with these unusual pieces. I replied honestly that I didn't know. She said "you really just work with each piece and let it reveal it's natural beauty don't you??" I was shocked that this C-wood operator understood more about the creative process that most (by far). I asked if she was an artists, and yes she is. She paints, but her favorite medium in leather. I look forward to seeing her work. But first, I better get my friends name.
One more comment; What C-Wood lumber has typically dried in their kiln is pictured in the back. Straight cut, typically oak and poplar. And their operation is all set up for this. They stack their "stacks" 4' high. They can easily stack several stacks on top of one another. Easy to get off the truck, into their sorting, cutting equipment, into their kiln, and back out and on the truck to be shipped back (often internationally).
My slabs don't fit into their system. And, although they all seem curious about what I do with it, as stacks fall to the ground, and as they try to figure out how to kiln dry it and get it the heck out of there, I don't think the name Robin Wade is one of their favorite words or visitors
I look forward to writing more about this unique small Tennessee community, they seems to receive most if not all of their income from the lumber, and hardwood industry..

Rustic Sassafras Console - Tuesday's Daily Deal
Rustic Sassafras Console - Tuesday's Daily Deal
Check back daily to find our daily deal. Rember, each piece is one of a kind. And we only have one. Today's daily deal is a big beauty. Here in the South, many of have fond memories of trecking into the woods in the wintertime, in search of a sassafras tree. We'd locate it, dig down to find a small part of it's root, cut it out bring it in and boil it to make the most delicious tea there is. The smell of wonderful sassafras tea is one of my favorite memories. And now, the smell of sassafras wood being worked is a close second. Such a pleasure to work.
Most sassafras trees don't grow very large around here. This one was an obvious exception.
This Rustic Sassafras console 60" - dimensions. 60"L x 34"H 16"W 3.5" Th. It was $2000. We put a clearance price on it this weekend of $1000. And for the first person to email that you want it (today only) its $700. Of course, there will be additional shipping charges.

We've been supplying the ShawLiving Showrooms for each market for a year or so now. And, in preparation for the upcoming shows, Kevin Corrao, their showroom designer, stopped by today. We confirmed a wonderful new organic table along with a couple more benches for the Las Vegas showroom, and loaded his car up with two more benches (the heavy sassafras and walnut) for their Atlanta 12,000 sq. foot showroom. The benches will be replacing one of the focal points of the previous Atlanta showroom, the cracked, stitched walnut bench, which will be moving to their New York showroom.

Wake up sleepy head! We have a Daily Deal Today!
Below is the content of one of the articles in todays special holiday edition of the monoLOG. If you aren't receiving our monthly newsletter - the monoLOG, you can sign up from our home page (top right side - "sign up here").
Wake up sleepy head! Let's see who's had their coffee this morning! Today's Monday, December 12, Daily Deal is our
Solid Walnut 40" bench, regularly $900. We made ten of these just for this sale so that we could offer you an amazing deal! Today, the first bench sold will be priced at $100, the second at $200, the third at $300, and the fourth at $400. The remaining six 40" Solid Walnut benches will be sold for $500 each (remember they are normally $900!).
Just like most of our furniture, this little bench is crafted of solid, locally harvested wood. We started with the walnut log, "flitch cut" it into slabs, debark the edges with a draw knife, and stack it to dry for a few years. Once the lumber is air dry, then kiln dryed, we design each piece into a functional work of art. Each one has a hand rubbed oil finish—no stain. All the amazing colors of the bench are the natural colors of the walnut tree. Oh, and one more thing you might notice: They are exhibiting "honest" fabricating techniques. Because of the substantial weight of the legs, we use massive 6-inch-long timberframe screws to attach them. And, as we've been doing lately, we aren't hiding these beautiful screws. They are there, we are proud of them, and we aren't going to try and keep them under wraps. Be sure to let us know what you think.

Friday's Daily Deal SOLD THURSDAY
Friday's Daily Deal SOLD THURSDAY
Oops, planning our Holiday sale, it didn't occur that we'd get almost immediate response and orders. To begin with, sorry about Selling the Friday's Deal on Thursday. We all just got excited and in the spirit, and it just happened.
That shouldn't happen again, because I'll try to make a point of not announcing the Daily Deal until "the day", ok. But also, keep in mind that like most of our furniture, these are one of a kind, and we only have one. So, just to clarify, the Daily Deal is for only one table. So, if you want to take advantage of it, you'll need to move faster than I am this morning.
One more thing; To make up for the mix-up yesterday, we are going to announce a second Daily Deal today. It'll be sometime today, and announced right here. So, just check back often.

No gifts for Alabama teacher's this year
It seems that we (Alabama) is writing these jokes for late night comededy. With any luck the immigration law will drift away. Today's morning news is that Alabama teacher's won't be allowed to accept Holiday gifts this year. -- I used to wonder why Alabama got such a bad wrap around the world. It's becoming more and more clear that we deserve every bit of it.

A mind blowing tour of HudsonAlpha Friday
A mind blowing tour of HudsonAlpha Friday
Linda and I were treated to a mind bloging tour of the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in Huntsville Friday. I knew almost nothing about the institute other than lots of very smart folks doing really good work in a really beautiful modern buildings "over there". Well, I was right I guess, but my understanding needed only to be magnified/multiplied significantly.
Holly Ralston, HudsonAlpha's Communications Director tried her best to explain what the heck's going on over there. Here's a summary:
1) Beautiful modern, architecture quite conducive to creative "thinking" and "doing"
2) It's full of folks doing amazing work. I understand almost nothing about it. But I heard words like genomes, aneuploidy, dna - ok, that's about all I retained here. And that's because of;
3) The amazing good these guys are doing. They are doing research to - well - make the world a better place. Cancer research, alternate fuel research! Wow. I really had no idea this was going on right down the road in Linda's hometown of
