What does this have to do with furniture, sustainability, philanthropy, modern, southern or food?  Nothing. .  . But I loved this movie and kinda fell for this really screwed up very young girl with the dragon tattoo.  Ok, i'm over it.  I really wouldn't want to take a chance and piss this gal off.  Would you?  Go see it if you get a chance.  I'll be watching it again when it comes to netflix.  Great movie.

The last daily steal of the year

The last daily steal of the year

It's Christmas eve and this is our last daily steal of the year.  I love this small modern maple bench. The last daily steal of the year.  I generally go too heavy, too big, too thick.  This is one of the smallest benches I've made, and I think it's a perfect fit.

This Modern Square Edge Maple bench was Clearance priced at $600.  I'm feeling quite "jovial" this morning, just before our friends arrive for another wonderful Christmas meal.  We only have one of these, and it will go to the first one to email a credit card order of $100.  Another $100 will get it shipped anywhere in the country.

It's 30" x 18" x 12", 2.75" thick. Local maple

thick walnut rounds - fresh out of the kiln

thick walnut rounds fresh from the kilnthick walnut rounds

Several unique cuts and slices, primarily of walnut recently returned home from the kiln.  A few of the 6" thick walnut rounds were in the mix.  These are so rare for us, that I'm going to save them for something quite special.  But to be honest, at this point, I don't have much of a clue just what to do with them.  If you have any thoughts of what to do with these thick walnut rounds within somewhat of a modern aesthetic, I'm all ears.

disaster or beautiful design-charred walnut lumber

disaster or beautiful design-charred walnut lumberdisaster or beautiful design

Several years ago, i visited my Amish friend's sawmill.  Before we began milling lumber inhouse, he milled our lumber.  It was a cold day, and he had a blazing fire pit full of walnut and cherry off cuts.  I walked closer, and saw smoke seemingly coming from a stack of just milled lumber.  I was shocked to see that a few of the pieces had begun to burn.  He told one of his boys to go get a pale of water, and it was put out.

Well, my entire stack of walnut lumber didn't burn to smithereens, so it wasn't a disaster.  I'm not sure how this first piece (of what I think my be only a couple??) is going to come out, but at this point, I wish we had let more pieces in the stack char, blacken, organically, naturally rapidly oxidize.

We'll get back to this one right after the first of the year to see just what we have.  I'm thinking it might become a "super charred" console table.

(Just before closing for the week/almost year) we put some sandpaper and elbow grease to it, and I was pleased to see that after the loose charcoal fell away, most of the remaining edge remains black, and doesn't seem to be coming off on my hands.  Venturing off into new territory, as I seem to regularly if I don't have my trusty gps turned on, we just never know what the day holds.

oak low table - today's daily steal

oak low tableoak low table

We only have two days till Christmas, and it's beginning to get a little quiet around the studio (and website). We always end our week here at noon on Fridays, and today, Christmas eve eve is no exception.

I'm hoping Santa's elves aren't as sleepy as you guys seem to have been the last couple of days.  Yesterday, you guys were obviously shopping for Ipad 2's or some other tech (or furniture) product, or like me, not doing much shopping at all.

Two day's left till Christmas means only two more daily steals here at RWF.  Today we (ok, it's a generous we) are offering one of my fav design styles;  The flowing grain leg.  This beautiful, thick oak low table has over the top organic lines along with a refined, modern style.  There is no visible joinery.  And, like all of our furniture, we started with the log, milled it into natural edge lumber, debarked it with a draw knife, allowed it to air dry for years (naturally), before the final kiln drying process.

It was clearance priced at $1000.  It's still here, but I'm thinking not for long.  Today's daily steal price (today only) is $500.  -- Yes, I think Santa is loosing his mind!!  Remember, we only have one.  Shipping is additional.  It wouldn't ship until Tuesday at this point.  First one to email an approved credit card # to robinwadefurniture@mac.com gets it.

Wake up sleepy heads!  And Happy Holidays. Oh, and don't forget to check back through the day tomorrow.  Santa might just totally loose it one more time this year!

solid walnut natural edge stair treads

solid walnut natural edge stair treads solid walnut natural edge stair treads

This was our first order for stair treads.  They are solid, 2 3/4" thick, 60" long.  Really very much like making a couple of dozen console table tops.  They look great. I'm looking forward to getting pics when the final project is complete.  Gosh, not that my memory is slipping, but I'm thinking they are going to Colorado.  But, it could be a mountain home in Kansas or Missouri.  Better figure this one out before we ship tomorrow.

cutting thick walnut rounds with Hendrick Panel Saw

cutting thick walnut rounds with Hendrick Panel Sawcutting thick walnut rounds with Hendrick Panel Saw

The variety of tools that we use to make my v. of furniture is varied.  From computers to design the tables in 3d to screwdrivers and hammers (sometimes to dig the rotten parts out).  Here we are using somewhat more traditional means of cutting these thick walnut rounds.  It's a Hendrick panel saw.  The blade is 16", the round if over 5" thick.  Hendrick designed the first panel saw on the market several decades ago.  It's really good to see them able to continue their business.  They make awesome products for the woodworking industry.  And their customer support for their equipment (even though I purchased it second hand) is second to none.

Typically, these panel saws are seen in the cabinet industry, to cut thin panels (of all things).

small organic oak desk

small organic oak desksmall organic oak desk

This is the last piece that we retrieved from the finishing room last week, and, much like her big sister, this one's a beaut.  Again, the amber tone of the oak slab is amazing.  It's really strange how oak can have so many looks, textures, tones, depth.  Depending on the type of oak, the soil condition, the age of the tree when harvested, the amount of sunlight, the types of foliage the sun filters through, maybe the vegitation growing over it's roots, maybe the types of worms that are doing their thing nearby, maybe which birds dropped by for a visit one day, maybe which song they sang.  I don't know the why's to most things, but I'm really

appreciating these new desks.

One of them will be shipping soon, and will be on display at the upcoming Las Vegas Market in January.  Oh, if you are interested, there is quite a bit of history regarding the tree this desk was made from.  I enjoy telling the story.  Just ask.

Last week we had our finishing room jam packed full of all these new designs.  Here is another one off.  The color of this oak slab top is absolutely stunning.  The legs are clean square heart of (local) walnut.  It is 60" long and at 30" tall it can be used as a small dining table or desk.

Here are two more pieces that just came out of the finishing room.  The tops are local oak, and the single leg base is a heavy solid short beam of heart pine.

We salvaged these short pieces of heart pine from a grain mill in Columbia Tennessee a few years ago, and haven't quite figured out what to do with them.  Although not as stable as some four leg tables, for a single leg I think they are working quite well.  Sitting your butt on the edge of this table is out of the question, BUT a few cups of coffee and a few magazines might just be fine.

If you have any ideas of other uses for the short chunks of heart pine, I'm all ears.

organic desk heading to vegas

organic desk heading to vegas            organic desk heading to vegas

It's taken a while for me to go this organic with a piece.  I think I was trying not to be too rustic so hard that I was missing out on all this.  I just can't get enough of these over the top organic pieces that just came out of the finishing room.  I'll be placing them on the appropriate page on the website soon, but for now - here's the first one.

On the surface, you might (as I did) think this super organic piece might not be the perfect fit for Las Vegas.  But, if you haven't been to Vegas in a while, you might just be missing something.  There is some incredibly thoughtful modern design in some of the casinos now.  And, just as Vegas is known for almost everything over the top, these latest pieces are over the top organic - and for me it's still not enough.

There's a lot going on with these pieces, and I'll be going into more detail over on the webiste soon.  For now, I hope you enjoy these pieces as much as I have been.

It's a good thing (for you) that we aren't selling this stuff by the pound, particularly this piece.  The legs are of heart pine that came from grain mill up the road in Columbia Tennessee.  The top was made from scraps of walnut - with a mix of heart and sapwood.  It's has a crazy low clearance price of $600.  It's yours for $400 - today only.  And as always, there's only one.  The first credit card today to hold it gets it.  And keep in mind that we close at noon on Fridays.

operation migration lands in russellville alabama

operation migration lands in russellville alabamaoperation migration lands in russellville alabama

I've been attempting to catch this group during it's annual migration from Wisconsin to Florida for years.  And, today I'm happy to report that I succeeded.

They landed recently at the Russellville Alabama airport and are landlocked by weather.  Linda and I saw on their blog that they might be here, and ran down to Russellville (again this year) hoping to catch up with this amazing group.

As we pulled into the tiny airport, it was clear that they were here.  Several Operation Migration vehicles - visibly three trailers and a van.  In addition to the birds (that are always nicely protected from tourists and us media folks) one fan was visiting along with two of the pilots.

I've got a great 3 minute video of founder Joseph Duff sharing their amazing story.

kiln dried walnut slabs

kiln dried walnut slabskiln dried walnut slabs

I received a call early yesterday morning from my friends at C-Wood lumber, just across the state line in Collinwood Tennessee.  Some of my walnut slab end cuts just came out of the kiln, and they were in the way.  I'm pretty sure that my organic lumber (if we can really call it that) has been a complete nuisance to this outfit, and this is probably among the worst of it.

Four years ago, as we were milling this natural edge lumber - actually a lot of it.  And there was an amazing amount that is typically spoilage - to be burned or tossed.  Although I have no idea what I'm going to do with it, the beefiest of the lot - of end cuts, we saved, stacked, air dried, and just now it spent a 6 weeks in the kiln.

I'm sure most of it will become firewood, but there is a good bit of beautiful, almost too organic material, that I'm looking forward to getting my hands on.

In the pic above, 20 year veteran at c-wood lumber, the kiln operator/manager poses with our "pieces".  Ok, one more quick story.  (I'm the worst with names), but it's amazing where I find creative people.  She asked what I was going to do with these unusual pieces.  I replied honestly that I didn't know.  She said "you really just work with each piece and let it reveal it's natural beauty don't you??"  I was shocked that this C-wood operator understood more about the creative process that most (by far).  I asked if she was an artists, and yes she is.  She paints, but her favorite medium in leather.  I look forward to seeing her work.  But first, I better get my friends name.

One more comment;  What C-Wood lumber has typically dried in their kiln is pictured in the back.  Straight cut, typically oak and poplar.  And their operation is all set up for this.  They stack their "stacks" 4' high.  They can easily stack several stacks on top of one another.  Easy to get off the truck, into their sorting, cutting equipment, into their kiln, and back out and on the truck to be shipped back (often internationally).

My slabs don't fit into their system.  And, although they all seem curious about what I do with it, as stacks fall to the ground, and as they try to figure out how to kiln dry it and get it the heck out of there, I don't think the name Robin Wade is one of their favorite words or visitors

I look forward to writing more about this unique small Tennessee community, they seems to receive most if not all of their income from the lumber, and hardwood industry..

Rustic Sassafras Console - Tuesday's Daily Deal

rustic sassafras console tableRustic Sassafras Console - Tuesday's Daily Deal

Check back daily to find our daily deal.  Rember, each piece is one of a kind.  And we only have one.  Today's daily deal is a big beauty.  Here in the South, many of have fond memories of trecking into the woods in the wintertime, in search of a sassafras tree.  We'd locate it, dig down to find a small part of it's root, cut it out bring it in and boil it to make the most delicious tea there is.  The smell of wonderful sassafras tea is one of my favorite memories.  And now, the smell of sassafras wood being worked is a close second.  Such a pleasure to work.

Most sassafras trees don't grow very large around here.  This one was an obvious exception.

This Rustic Sassafras console 60" - dimensions.  60"L x 34"H 16"W 3.5" Th.  It was $2000.  We put a clearance price on it this weekend of $1000.  And for the first person to email that you want it (today only) its $700.  Of course, there will be additional shipping charges.
