duck on walnut

In celebration of this mallard's one month old birthday, we brought him in to the gallery and gave him a tour.  Soon as he feathers and can fly we'll be releasing him back to the creek.

conference table for Robert Trent Jones club house

This conference table will be on display at Robert Trent Jones golf trail club house later this summer.  It's approx 17' long and will be a 6 legger when complete.  The top is a one piece oak slab that was harvested locally.  The legs are oak as well.  The cross support piece is from a local walnut tree, as well as a couple of joinery pieces - coming.

It's spring and the turtles are doing their thing

Most mornings I walk the pups down to one of my favorite bends in cypress creek.  For the past couple of weeks, there has been evidence of the annual egg laying ceremony.  You can see that this mama turtle isn't particularly pleased with the paparazzi.

natural oak headboard

Yesterday I delivered this amazing natural oak headboard to my friend's wonderful home on Shoals Creek.  This was my first headboard, but I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome.

Every Spring, after a big rain, driftwood fills his slough.  This piece looks like it came straight out of his slough!

Tony lives on one of my favorite lots around.  It's on a pine shaded peninsula and he just remodeled.  It's a log cabin, but you couldn't see any of the logs once you were inside.  Now, with the remodel, it's - well - amazing.  Oh, just click here if you'd like to see a pic of the http://www.robinwadefurniture.com/natural-oak-headboard/.

matching piece

I know the matching slab is in here somewhere.  The big conference table top is ready for the legs, but I can't find the matching / sister slab for them anywhere.

Arts Alive

Great fun saturday night at the annual Arts Alive shindig.  Amazing the quality of art in our area.  I look forward to mentioning several of my favs soon here.  But for now, let me say that I love the color green!  Didn't receive the blue award this year, but could hardly be more pleased with my merit award.  If you are local, just in case you haven't seen this year's entry's, I believe the showing will continue for a month or so at Kennedy Douglas.  More to come.

our first friday event keeps getting better

I love downtown florence, al's first friday event.  Art, artists, music, authors.  We are in the midst of some wonderful talent. Seems like each one is better than the last, and I really love that our residents seem to be appreciating it as well.  Another awsome turnout.  So fun to see the streets packed for an event (in addition to Handy).  OK, it's not Handy yet, but I do see the potential here.  Linda and I were glad to finally get an autographed copy of Debbie Wilson's book "Brushing away the tears".  Can't wait to "wade" in.  Losing a brother so early, and to difficult circumstances .  .  .  is difficult.

I'm wondering about this brick that washed down the creek

I see these bricks from time to time in cypress creek, usually after it floods.  I've always heard rumors that there was a brick factory at the bend in the creek @ Eunice Circle, maybe in the late 1800's.  That would have been well before the moonshine still business was there.  I'm curious if these bricks could have come from the factory.  Anyone know someone who would know?

sushi at my favorite asian restaurant in alabama

It's really great to finally have a really good asian restaurant here in town.  Although, for now, I'm not able to eat raw fish,  this sushi plate looked tempting.  Most of their chinese and japanese dishes are exceptional.  Rice Box, north florence.

Earth day

After all the storms, storm warnings and bad weather it's amazing that Nancy was able to pull off this year's earth day event at all.  All the wonderful entertainers and musicians must have had their speaker volume on "outdoor", because they were blasting.  I (and my baby mallards) couldn't take it, and took a couple of nice long volume breaks.  I guess I know why we have earth day events outside on the earth whenever possible.  Good work Nancy for doing the best with the weather Mother Nature delivered.

sunday's book discussion group

Way behind on some blog posts over that last several days.  My Apple Time Capsule's not working which has knocked my wireless out at home.  Our Saturday book discussion moved to Sunday this week.  Another fun, interesting discussion.  Tuddy brought these fresh cut roses from his back yard.

I'm a dad!

Here's a pic of my neighbor David Cassidy, with two of the baby mallards he found this morning.

We've been looking for baby mallards for a couple of months.  My neighbor up the creek called this morning.  Said he's been chasing them all morning, and had 10 in a cooler.  As I was arriving at his house (by car) one ran across the road right in front of me and into a yard!  I was able to chase him down, and was able to bring all 11 back to the studio.  Can't remember how long it takes for them to grow to full size.  Maybe a couple of months?? before we release them back to their mom and the creek.  For now, there's plenty of chirping going on in here!

Oh, just in case anybody's wondering what I'm doing frantically gathering up these babies, here' the deal.  Being a duck is quite a risky business.  Being a baby duck, at least here on this creek, seems to be a short term proposition.  Between the foxes, coyotes, rat snakes, turtles, catfish, it's amazing that these ducks lasted the 24 hours or so it took before we found them.  Last Spring Linda called me and said there were seven (brand new) baby ducks swimming around the creek behind their mama.  By the time I got home (7 minute drive) the Mom was by herself again.  These baby's are just too enticing to, well it seems like every critter out here.
