Florence, Alabama, wood artist Robin Wade has trouble admitting that he is, indeed, an artist. In his mind, Mother Nature is the artist, while he is simply the messenger. “I haven’t yet found a better artist than nature,” he says. “I just don’t want to mess it up!” In his slow studio, Wade begins to work his magic when the lumber is dry—years after it comes to him. He creates one-of-a-kind furniture pieces using two chain saws, one big sawmill, two 6,000 pound fork lifts (one inside and one out), one drawknife, and a plethora of large and small hand and power tools. The resulting works of art accentuate the grain, shape, and beautiful imperfections that make each piece of wood uniquely gorgeous. Each table or bench is solid wood that is finished with a hand-applied oil and celebrates Mother Nature’s unique creations. These breathtaking pieces are crafted in walnut, cherry, oak, and sassafras, and are heirloom pieces created by hand and inspired by nature—works of a true wood artist.
